Computer Worms

Computer worms are different from viruses because they reproduce and spread differently, they are independent at the time they spread and also they reproduce independently and can invade more computers than viruses. Worms can travel in networks; by this they can reach more computers faster.

Email Worms

This type of worm is one of the most famous because it spreads through emails, infecting millions of computers.  It moves from attachment to attachment or different links.  These are the most common ways they spread:
  • MS Outlook Services
  • Direct connection to SMTP servers using their own SMTP API
  • Windows MAPI functions
Internet Worms
This worms move through networks, they infiltrate your networks using local operating systems, they look for weak networks or vulnerable ones.  When they get to your network they gain full access of your computer and can cause some severe damage and they get the opportunity to spread to other networks easily.
Examples
-not patched
-Data packets

  1. I have always wondered, who makes these worms? Where do they start from and what is their purpose? I don't see why people would want to intentionally harm other people's computers for no gain.

    1. worms and viruses are codes that people created, they start from a basic computer that somebody that has knowledge in how to write codes, they make them to hurt others computers,to hack computers and to make them vulnerable. Maybe the main purpose is not to harm computers is to take something out of your computer, like information you have in your computer. Now you can see that online wars between countries exist, and they star one by hackers or by infecting computers so they have a daily. Imagine if a worm or a virus were to infect the stock market, that will created caos in a country so I think they have other purposes beside hurting your computer. But in that case that you say for no harm, once a worms is realized to do something the hacker wanted to do the worm is going to spread all over because is independent and thats why you can get a worm in your computer

  2. I was going to ask what can create these worms, but Francisco has answer my question. How is it going to hurt your computer? Is it by making it slower or something? I believe that the first person who had create the computer will have all the answer to why he/she would even let it have codes that could do that to the computer. I don't think an ordinary person will have the knowledge to do it.

  3. Because this is different from a virus, I'm curious to know how it'll effect the computer. I dont think I ever been effected by any. Of course I have about 2500 unread emails and probably about 500 of them have attachments with it. I never open message from sites that I dont know but it intrigues me that some people will. But once affected by the worm, how much does it cost to fix the damages?
