Cyber Warfare

So we all have heard about the nuclear threats from North Korea, but nobody is worried about the possible cyber-attacks.  Currently North Korea does not have the technology to reach the United States with their nuclear weapons.  They do, however, have the technology to shut down South Korea’s computer networks.  Recently North Korea launched cyber-attacks that shut down banks and broadcasters of South Korea.  The United States has partnered with South Korea to try to prevent future attacks from North Korea.  Since there is the looming threat of nuclear weapons it has become more prominent on everyone’s mind.  The threat of cyber-attacks may need to be more prominent in everyone’s mind.  Since all of our information is kept on computer’s there is a possibility of information being hacked by countries that we consider our enemies.  This is why it is great that the United States is taking precautions to protect their information.

Cyber warfare can potentially become a huge threat to the United States and other developed countries who keep their information predominately online.  Think of all the personal information and government information that is stored online.  This information could be obtained by an enemy and used for their gain.  A hacker could also just shut down our systems.  In the United States everything is now being ran by technology and if someone hacked this information and shut down the system it would put our country on an unavoidable lock down.  It is important that the government and businesses work to protect their information from being hacked by malicious enemies.

  1. This could very well be the beginning of an entirely new method used in warfare. As someone who plans on joining the military after college, thoughts of having to fight a whole new threat is intimidating. This could very well mean an increase in IT jobs in the military will be on the rise in the near future.

    1. Austin I think that it is very disturbing to think that this a whole new type of warfare. I think the government needs try to be proactive instead of reactive to anything that could shut down any part of our networks. I think you have a very good point in saying that there will be an increase in IT jobs in the military. It would be a good idea for more members of the military to be more technically advanced.

  2. Haley,

Cyber-warfare is becoming a threat to both national security as well as the security of private companies that have operations based in the United States. Though most operations are ran by technology, the Department of Defense and NSA are well aware of the threats and prepare each system to be the most secure they can possibly be. The U.S. Military makes it a point to recruit the best and brightest for their cyber-warfare departments, being former military myself, I know they take all threats very seriously. In fact, in the past week the Pentagon announced that they are finalizing plans on how to properly deal with, and respond to cyber-threats. Cyber-attacks are not seen as acts of war but rather as disruptive practices aimed at crippling infrastructure which is not something the U.S. government and the DoD are going to allow. Our country will always have enemies. I am confident that if cyber-warfare becomes the new-age battlefield, the U.S. will be on the cutting edge of battlefield technology, just as it has always been.

    1. I agree and am glad to know that the United States is being proactive in the cyber-threats that they encounter. I feel we are very technologically advanced compared to many other nations. I hope that any attacks that are aimed towards the U.S. can be stopped before they can do any detriment to our society. I really enjoyed the article that you posted and found it useful when it comes to how the U.S. will deal with attacks.

  3. North Korea and Iran represent a distinctive threat. While I agree that the US is decidedly protected from a nuclear attack(for the time being), nations such as South Korea and Israel are trenched in geographically precarious positions. Location alone makes them prime targets for aggressive and anti-US strikes. As our allies, attacking their infrastructure could be very detrimental to us as well. The only way to ensure safety and security is through open and continuous conversation - the intelligence will only be as effective as how it is analyzed and also relayed.

    1. Mary Alice you have a very good point. Communication will be the only way to keep safe and secure. If it is important for the United States to keep in mind that our allies who have enemies may put us in danger. Your point about intelligence only being as effective as how it is analyzed and also relayed is a great point. We need to make sure the we are in constant communication.

  4. This brings up a very good point. There are countries that do pose a threat to the United States and it is very important for the US to do what they can to make sure to keep information safe and secure. Kyle's comment also is interesting: a cyber warfare does not seem too far fetched and something like this is probable.

    1. I agree the idea of a cyber warfare is not an outlandish idea. This means that the United States must continue to lead in technological development. We have to keep developing new technologically and coming up with preventative ways to stop possible attacks. I hope that cyber warfare does not happen, but there is always that possibility.

  5. I believe in the future, more wars will be fought through cyber wars between countries. The old way of stocking up on guns and other military equipment such as planes, ships, will change, as countries will start finding individuals with superior Information Technology knowledge to help fight the cyber wars. In order to prevent these types of cyber wars, the world needs to form something like the UN of Computer Systems, or something that acts as a enforcer to these types of attacks. Globally, countries need to be more informed about the possible cyper crimes, and what would the effects be if those cyber attacks were carried out.

    1. Andrew, I agree that technological warfare is going to progress, but I'm not sure it will completely eliminate other forms of war. There are many developing countries that do not have the technology of developed countries so technological warfare would not impact these countries as much. I do think that the use of technology as a weapon will continue to grow and the detrimental effects will continue to become more devastating.

  6. Although the idea of cyber warfare is scary, I believe the reason it has gained less attention than the nuclear threats is because the threat of cyber warfare stretches further than North Korea. Even as we speak Russia, China, and the US are in a race and it is not to the moon, or to build the strongest army; it is to build the most dangerous and unbeatable cyber army. In fact the recent cyber attacks from China have become so overbearing that the pentagon has officially finished a set of guidelines that will aid military commanders in how to respond to them. These rules also include an offensive plan that will give 13 hacker teams the clearance to electronically attack threats when needed.

    1. This is a very good point. There are many countries that are creating this idea of a "cyber army." With our entire society revolving around the internet it leaves us susceptible to attacks.

  7. Very interesting points are brought up throughout this blog. While most might not worry about the potential cyber-warfare, we need to become more aware of the potential that these countries have to steal completely confidential information from our government. Maybe there is some way that the government can shift vital information to the operations and secrecy of US Official documents to have more and more backup in case this information is leaked/deleted.

    1. I agree we need to be more aware of the threats of other countries. All of our information is out on the internet and could be hacked by other countries.

  8. Thinking about this type of warfare instead of the traditional guns and bombs just seems crazy but I can see it coming in the future as countries like the U.S. is such a big dependent on internet communications and storage of files and things of importance to military being help on computers. Therefore becoming targets for attacks from enemies. Soon enough people will be able to hack into an enemies technological weapons systems and defeat their enemies without even stepping foot in the country.

    1. I agree and it is scary to think that people would be able to launch attacks without entering the country. It is similar to biological warfare and it makes it scary everyday to live in our society.
